Slacker Radio iPhone Application Review

Wednesday, December 16, 2009

Hot on the heels of the Slacker app for BlackBerry announcement the other day, comes a Slacker Radio application for the iPhone. I love my Slacker G2 Personal Radio, so I was anxious to check out how this free application on the iPhone compared to it.
To use this app, you’ll need a Slacker Radio account. Don’t worry, it’s free. If you happen to already have a premium account, you can use it to login to the iPhone app. Here are some of the features:
• Free music library featuring millions of songs• High-quality stereo playback from any wireless connection• Over 100 professionally programmed genre stations• Create custom artist stations• Fine tune stations to play more of the music you like• View artist biographies and photos• View album art and reviews• “Peek Ahead” artist and album preview• Pause and skip songs• Rate songs as favorites• Ban the songs and artists you don’t like The first time you launch the Slacker player, you’ll be in your station listing screen. Your favorite and custom stations are shown at the top. Custom channels are created on the Slacker website. As far as I can tell, there isn’t a way to create one through the iPhone app. When you scroll the station screen, you will see a list of different genres of music. Tapping the genre name will take you to another screen…With individual stations for that genre. Tapping a station will let you listen to music in that station. To add that

station to your favorites, you tap the station title bar at the top of the display. From there you can add it to your favorites. It doesn’t look like there is a way to remove favorites through the app… Yes folks, there is a Jack Bauer Slacker station…

Internet Radio Box

Surely you’ve heard of Internet Radio? Everyone from bedroom broadcasters to big commercial stations pumping out music and voice 24 hours a day via the Internet? And all for free? Sounds idyllic, but the reality is that there is huge variety in terms of file formats and bitrates, plus there’s a high turnover of ’stations’. What’s needed is a clever iPhone application, with a real time, maintained database, to gather everything into an interface that ‘just works’. And Internet Radio Box is it.

In fact, there are several iPhone-hosted Internet Radio clients, but this is arguably the best and most all-encompassing. It draws in its own ‘Radio Box’ network of MP3 and WMA (Windows Media Audio) streaming stations, adds a complete SHOUTcast (an older, proprietary streaming format that’s starting to die out) directory as well, and then tops this by adding an entire ‘icecast’ (an open source rival to SHOUTcast) directory too. The end result is a mass of semi-organised radio stations that you can access anywhere on the planet, numbering over a thousand in all. That’s a lot of listening.

Internet Radio Box’s interface is well thought out, with four basic tabs: ‘Radio stations’ is the directory section, of course; ‘Player’ is effectively the ‘Now playing’ panel and music started here will continue to play while you access the other tabs; ‘Settings’ gives information about bandwidth used and lets you set up bitrate limits over 3G/EDGE; and, lastly, ‘Browser’ is a custom instance of Safari and means that you can look up information about a radio station while it’s playing. You’ll remember that the iPhone OS doesn’t allow third party apps to run in the background, so the moment you switch away from Radio Box the music stops – hence the workaround by including a browser within the application itself.

This limitation of only working in the foreground really hits hard with something like Internet radio – the whole point of it on other platforms is that it gives you a new source of tunes while you’re working away doing something else. On the iPhone in Internet Radio Box, you’re limited to using Safari in its own window, and that’s it. Apple, please take note and rethink your OS philosophy here.

This limitation isn’t the developer’s fault, though more could have been done to help matters – there’s no saving of your current station when the application is forced to exit, so you have to rely on manually adding stations as ‘Favourites’ and then using this list as your shortcut back to where you were before the interruption. Even so, I’ve still opted for a decent star rating in the review – at the end of the day, it’s the variety of material and the quality of the sound which is important here and Internet Radio Box comes through with flying colours. On many of the stereo stations, music is as clear here as when played in iTunes itself.

The main Radio Box directory is speedy to load and nicely organised, but the SHOUTcast and icecast directories are slow and are also let down by stations not being sorted alphabetically within each genre – when you’re looking for a specific station this is a right pain.
Look past the annoyances though, and you’ve still got a reliable core of enjoyable Internet Radio stations that will serve you well day in, day out, and all for free once you’ve handed over your dollar for Internet Radio Box itself.Read more: http://iphoneapplicationlist.com/2009/08/01/internet-radio-box-2/#ixzz0Zq6fbAgD

Universal, YouTube to launch music video site

Friday, April 10, 2009

Universal Music Group and YouTube have announced plans for a music video website with artists from the world's largest music company, the latest industry bid to pull revenue from the Internet.

Universal, a subsidiary of France's Vivendi, and Google, which owns YouTube, said Thursday that the website, to be called VEVO, would be launched later this year.

Universal and YouTube also said they had renewed an agreement that allows users of YouTube to use music by Universal artists in user-generated videos on the popular video-sharing website. Details of the agreement were not disclosed.

The two companies said in a statement that they will share advertising revenue on YouTube and VEVO.com, which they described as a "premium online music video hub built for consumers, advertisers and content owners."

"This content will be exclusively available through VEVO.com and a new VEVO channel through a special VEVO branded embedded player," they said.

"VEVO will bring the most compelling premium music video content and services to the world's single largest online video audience," said Universal chief executive Doug Morris.

"We believe that at launch, VEVO will already have more traffic than any other music video site in the United States and in the world."

Google chief executive Eric Schmidt said the Internet search giant, which will provide the technology for VEVO.com, is "thrilled to be working with UMG in what will surely be an exciting new service for consumers, advertisers, content creators and the music industry at large."

Music videos are among the most popular content on YouTube, which Google bought for 1.65 billion dollars in October 2006, and Universal's channel is already the most-watched on the site with more than 3.5 billion views.

Mountain View, California-based Google has been striving for ways to make money on YouTube while avoiding alienating notoriously transient Web users and assuring film and music studios that video copyrights are being respected.

Warner Music Group pulled its videos from YouTube in December after the companies failed to reach agreement on fees but another major label, Sony Music Entertainment, inked a new deal with YouTube this year.

YouTube began blocking certain copyrighted music videos in Britain and Germany earlier this year while new licensing deals are negotiated.

As album sales decline and online piracy bites into their profits, major record labels have been forging new arrangements such as deals with MySpace, Apple's iTunes and YouTube to generate new revenue streams.

The number of US Internet users watching videos at YouTube hit a new monthly high in January, topping 100 million as it dominated the online video arena, according to comScore.

And Google may have more than one major new venture in mind.

Twitter co-founder Biz Stone said on Friday following a report that Google was seeking to purchase the hot micro-blogging service that his goal was to build a "profitable, independent company."

Stone, in a brief post on the Twitter blog, said that "it should come as no surprise that Twitter engages in discussions with other companies regularly and on a variety of subjects.

"Our goal is to build a profitable, independent company and we're just getting started," Stone said in the post, which he called "a response to the latest Internet speculation about where Twitter is headed."

Stone's comments came hours after influential technology blogger Michael Arrington, writing on his blog TechCrunch, said Internet search giant Google was in talks to acquire the hot San Francisco-based startup.

Google: Businesses can benefit from video sharing!

Video sharing and social networking aren't just for the kids--Google reckons there is a place for both in the business world.

Dave Girouard, vice president and general manager of enterprise at Google, told ZDNet Asia's sister site silicon.com: "Our intention is to bring as much of Google's technology to the enterprise suite as possible, and using video to share information inside a business is an obvious need."

Girouard said video sharing is "a zero-billion-dollar industry". In other words, video is something everyone thinks and talks about, but so far no one has worked out how to use it for information-sharing on a large scale within the business world.

Google acquired YouTube for US$1.65 billion last year, and recently rolled out an advertising format on the video-sharing site, which may be a way to cash in on the hefty investment.

Nine Inch Nails - Live In Singapore

Monday 10 August 2009

"The Industrial Rock Godfather" is coming to Singapore! LAMC Productions is thrilled to announce that legendary Grammy winning industrial rock group Nine Inch Nails will perform Live in Singapore for one night only!Trent Reznor officially confirmed that Nine Inch Nails are set to tour the globe in 2009 for one last time before going on hiatus indefinitely. “In NIN world, 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of our first releases. I’ve been thinking for some time now, it’s time to make NIN disappear for a while.”

Nine Inch Nails come to Singapore hot off a headlining slot on the Sonisphere Festival in Knebworth, England.

Trent Reznor is the multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and creative driving force of Nine Inch Nails. Spin magazine described Reznor as “the most vital artist in music.” In 1997, Time magazine named Trent Reznor as one of the most influential Americans of that year. Rolling Stone picked Reznor as one of the 100 people who are “Reinventing America”. Reznor placed 46 out of the 100, with President Barrack Obama in first. In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Nine Inch Nails at #94 on its list of the 100 greatest artists of all time.

Over the course of the past two decades, Trent Reznor has started his own label - The Null Corporation, stolen the show at both Lollapalooza and Woodstock ‘94, produced/exec-produced three albums for Marilyn Manson and soundtracks for David Lynch’s “Lost Highway” and Oliver Stone’s “Natural Born Killers”, released a slew of singles and the home video (Closure), and created music for the CD-ROM game, “Quake.”

Meanwhile, “Pretty Hate Machine” has gone triple-platinum, topped SoundScan’s pop catalog chart, and was named in Rolling Stone’s “200 Albums Essential to any Rock Collection”. The Grammy-winning “Broken” went platinum as well, while “The Downward Spiral” actually topped them both, debuting at #2 on SoundScan’s Top 200, and selling more than 5 million copies worldwide. The latter was also named one of Rolling Stone’s “Essential Recordings of the ‘90’s” and one of Spin’s “Greatest Albums of the ‘90’s.”

Nine Inch Nails will perform at Fort Canning Park on Monday, 10th August 2009. Don’t pass on this opportunity to experience Nine Inch Nails “LIVE” for the very first time in Singapore!

How to Embed MP3 Audio Files In Web Pages With Google or Yahoo! Flash Player

Tuesday, January 27, 2009

Question: How do you embed an MP3 file (like a podcast, song or background music) into a web page or an RSS feed so that visitors can listen to the audio in the browser itself without requiring an external player like QuickTime or Windows Media Player.

Answer: We earlier recommended the Google MP3 Player for embedding MP3 songs and audio podcasts in web pages but for some reason, the Google Flash player has stopped working on external websites other than listening to voicemail messages on Gmail.com.

So here we explore some new Flash MP3 players from Google and Yahoo! that are again light-weight, easy to implement and extremely efficient.

1. Google Reader MP3 Player

Google Reader has an inbuilt MP3 player that is pretty much the same as Gmail player but it also works on non-Google websites. This player has volume controls, no Google branding and it auto-detects the duration of the music file so your readers know how long the song will last. Here’s a live example followed by the HTML embed code:

To use this MP3 player on your website or blog, copy-paste the following code and replace the MP3_FILE_URL with the link to your MP3 file.

<embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.google.com/reader/ui/3247397568-audio-player.swf?audioUrl=MP3_FILE_URL" width="400" height="27" allowscriptaccess="never" quality="best" bgcolor="#ffffff" wmode="window" flashvars="playerMode=embedded" />

2. Yahoo! MP3 Player

If you think normal is boring, check this out. Yahoo! offer a code generator (Easy Listener) to help you create a Flash based MP3 player that matches your website color theme and layout. See example:

Though this Easy Listener MP3 player requires you to pass the address of the web page that contains the MP3 file(s), you can directly pass the MP3 link and it will work just fine. Supports auto play and you can decide where the meta data associated with the MP3 file should be displayed.

<embed src="http://webjay.org/flash/dark_player" width="400" height="40" wmode="transparent" flashVars="playlist_url=MP3_FILE_URL&amp;skin_color_1=-145,-89,-4,5&skin_color_2=-141,20,0,0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" />

3. Yahoo! Media Player

If you maintain an MP3 blog or run a podcast and regularly link to MP3 files, it makes little sense to embed a separate Flash player with every MP3 file. I would therefore recommend using the Yahoo! Media Player that auto-detects links to MP3 files in your web pages and creates an embedded player for each link.

All you have to do is insert the following link in your blog template and all MP3 hyperlinks will be converted into inline MP3 players. This also has the shuffle feature and visitors can easily skip to any song in the playlist. Excellent stuff.

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://mediaplayer.yahoo.com/js"></script>

4. Odeo MP3 Player

Odeo offers a pretty impressive MP3 player (see example) that works perfect in web pages as well as RSS readers but a small issue is that Odeo Player requires you to type the exact duration of the song in the embed code. You can skip this step but then the progress bar won’t reflect the true status when you play the song. And there are no volume controls.

To use Odeo MP3 player in your website, add the following code replacing MP3_FILE_URL and DURATION with relevant values.

<embed type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="http://www.odeo.com/flash/audio_player_standard_gray.swf" width="400" height="52" allowScriptAccess="always" wmode="transparent" flashvars="audio_duration=DURATION&amp;external_url=MP3_FILE_URL" />
